The small but flexible staff of the Bay Runner love that they have avoided getting a real job for so long. Working in the media business is cool and getting to do it in the beautiful “Waterfront Capital of Texas” is a dream.
Bay Runner publisher John Ennis is a Clear Lake High School alumn who returned to the Bay Area with his wife Betsey in 1997. After a successful stint at a venture-financed Internet startup during a final preparation for an Initial Public Offering, Ennis ended his daily commutes to West Houston in 1998 when he and Betsey founded Bay Area Media Services (BAMS) in a spare bedroom. Prior to returning to the Bay Area, Ennis was a Cox News Service sports reporter and editor who was published by the Associated Press, United Press International, USA Today and more than 50 different magazines and newspapers including the Atlanta Constitution Journal, Dallas Morning News and Austin American Statesman. Ennis is also publisher of The SCENE magazine and CEO of Ennis Entities, LLC. He is proud to sit on the board of some local charities and foundations. In the last year, Ennis has been a Cowboy Who Cooks, a Men Who Cooks, a Celebrity Blackjack Dealer, and a judge of many competitions including Guitar Center’s Battle of the Bands, the Bay Area Mix-off and the Iron Bartender contest. His favorite interviews include actress Jada Pinkett Smith, football legend Jim Brown and former US Senator and Astronaut John Glenn.
Betsey Ennis is the editor of The SCENE and Bay Runner and co-founder of Bay Area Media Services (BAMS), a Clear Lake-based advertising and design firm. Her three loves (aside from her hubby) are graphic design, writing and photography. “I’m thrilled I’ve been given the opportunity to culminate my three favorite hobbies into a job that I love to wake up to each morning.” Prior to joining BAMS full time with her husband, Betsey worked for local newspapers such as the Clear Lake Citizen & Exchange News and The Baytown Sun. Betsey is a member of ABPW and the Society of Professional Journalists. She is also on the Board of Directors for the American Cancer Society League of Bay Area and is serving as logistics co-chair for the 2007 Go Red for Women Luncheon on May 4, benefiting the American Heart Association Clear Lake/Bay Area division.
No member of the Bay Runner team has spent more time with the publication than account executive Shannon Alexander. Alexander was the Bay Runner sales force for years under founder Harvey Tidwell. Alexander was part of the original creative team that launched The SCENE. After stints specializing in real estate marketing with The Real Estate Book and Homes and Land magazine, Alexander returned to the sales staff of the Bay Runner and SCENE. Alexander is a proud mother who enjoys living along the coast.
Bay Runner account executive Brenda Chamblee returns to the media business with The SCENE and Bay Runner magazines after a successful run in the staffing industry. A veteran of the radio business, Chamblee is from Deer Park and currently lives there with her family.
Editorial Contributors: Bay Runner contributor Peggy "Domino" Taylor once flew all over the world to cover air shows and other aviation-related topics as an international freelance writer. Before that, Taylor served as a staff writer at the Airline News covering a beat that centered around the Bush Intercontinental Airport in north Houston. Now Taylor is happy to call the home of manned space flight home and covers a wide-range of aviation and areospace-related topics for the Bay Runner. Taylor is also a regular contributor to the Bay Runner's sister paper, The SCENE. Her day job is coordinating the tourism industry in the city of Seabrook.
