Bay Runner Series: Rail to Clear Lake

Publisher's note on Rail: In January 2004 just in time for the Super Bowl, the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris Country, Texas (Metro) implemented a rail line running 7.5 miles from Downtown to south of Reliant Park near Reliant Stadium.

The track follows the Main and Fannin streets corridor, linking Downtown, Midtown, the Museum District, Hermann Park, the Texas Medical Center and Reliant Park. As of May 10th, there have been 39 accidents involving the rail.

But of more importance to Bay Runner readers is what comes next. Expansion is planned with additional rail connecting the two airports and local colleges expected next. But Houston suburbs such as Sugar Land are already working on extensions to reach into town similar to what is done in Dallas and other major cities. What is being done in Clear Lake and how long will it be until local residents can take Monorail to a rockets game and visitors to Houston can take a monorail to Space Center Houston and other local attractions.

The chances for connecting Houston and Clear Lake via some kind of rail appeared good in 1988 when three-fifths of voters endorsed a Metropolitan Transit Authority transit plan that included $1 billion of light rail. In 1991 the METRO board voted to amend the plan to a monorail system.  (
