NOOD Regatta hits Galveston Bay Sept. 24-26

The nation's premier sailing tour comes to the Lone Star State as the NOOD Tour presented by Mount Gay Rum comes to Galveston Bay, Texas September 24-26. The Sailing World Magazine National Offshore One Design (NOOD) Regatta Series is the longest running and most prestigious and popular racing series in the North America.

The Houston NOOD event will be at the Lakewood Yacht Club located in Seabrook, TX. This event is the final event of nine-event series in the 2004 NOOD season. The tour has crisscrossed the U.S. and Canada with stops in San Diego, Detroit, Chicago, Toronto and Boston before the finish in Houston.

Now in its 17th year, the Sailing World NOOD Tour is designed to create a level playing field where larger sailboats can race boat for boat without handicap adjustments.  Sailors enjoy the NOOD Tour because it puts racing skills over boat design.

The Sailing World NOOD at Houston draws many of the best sailors from the Lone Star State. In 2003 close to 125 boats and 500 sailors competed in the event from throughout Texas. While most of the competitors were from Houston and Galveston, competitors came from Dallas/Ft. Worth, El Paso and Austin to compete in the premier sailing series in the North America.

The NOOD regattas are a nine-event racing circuit owned and organized by Sailing World magazine of Newport, Rhode Island.  All nine NOOD Regattas are sanctioned by US SAILING, the national governing body of sailing in the US.  Mount Gay Rum presents the Houston NOOD. Support sponsors who join the event held on Galveston Bay include: Hall Spars & Rigging, Ronstan, Frederiksen, Marlow, Gill North America, North Sails, Red Stripe Lager, Brooks and Gatehouse and Sunsail.

HARVEST MOON RACERS URGED
TO REGISTER ONLINE

Harvest Moon Regatta Chairman Jeff Southard has announced that participants in the 18th Annual Harvest Moon Regatta can register on line this year at www.harvestmoonregatta.com, or the site of the race host, Lakewood Yacht Club, at www.lakewoodyachtclub.com by clicking on the Harvest Moon Regatta button.  This race is open to the public and registration fees are $10 less if one registers online instead of completing the traditional paper entry forms which are available at local marinas and yacht clubs. The race is slated to begin on Thursday, October 21, 2 pm, off the Flagship Hotel in Galveston.  This overnight race from Galveston to Port Aransas is one of the longest (150 miles) and largest races (275 competitors) in the United States.  This "Third Coast" event is sponsored by Bay Access, a local non-profit 501c3 dedicated to the involvement of youth and amateur racing as well as safe boating practices.

In addition to providing keen racing competition, Lakewood's Race Committee Chairman John Barnett reminds the boating community that this race affords sailors and their compatriots the opportunity to enjoy Port Aransas, a popular Texas fishing community that is home for the post race party and awards ceremony held in the City Pavilion.  This post race event is one of the largest Regatta parties on the Gulf Coast with over 2,000 expected to be in attendance this year. Benefiting Armand Bayou Nature Center, the Harvest Moon Regatta takes its name from autumn's harvest moon when the weather conditions are ideal for sailing just about 5-10 miles offshore.  For further information or questions concerning the 18th Annual Harvest Moon Regatta, please call Lakewood Yacht Club at 281-474-2511 or e-mail the club at lyc@priorityx.net.
